Artist Ursula Stocke NEEDS YOUR HELP!

I write this evening not really knowing what to say or how to say it. Last night I was struck with the news that our dear friend and fellow painter/teacher Ursula Stocke has been diagnosed with Stage 4 Colon Cancer. Immediately I knew I had to help in whatever way I could.

Both Ursula Stocke and her husband Ron Stocke have performed many painting demonstrations, classes, and workshops at both our Artists' Edge locations over the years. The two are relatively inseparable. They often teach together, helping to support each others events, and to those artists (and even normal people) who know them, they are an absolute treasure.

My friendship with Ron & Ursula began with business, but in recent years has rounded out as shared interests, not only art, but a genuine passion for art education, and even international travel. My wife Karin and I were just trying to figure out a time in our busy schedules to meet for dinner and give Ron & Ursula tips and tricks for enjoying a trip to Northern Italy, where we have been many times...

Then as we try to figure out our busy hectic lives, the news breaks. I hear from Ron, that his wife Ursula has Stage 4 Colon Cancer.

I am absolutely shocked. Don't know what to say. 42 years old. Hey, that could be me!

I spoke with Ron this morning. He and Ursula are in good spirits, about as good as anyone could be in this situation. But they will need help. They are underinsured and need help raising funds to get the treatments that Ursula has no choice but to get.

Michelle Amicucci has the Artists' Edge

At Artists' Edge, we work with Artists all the time. Sometimes it might be helping them with supplies for their creative endeavors, other times it may be framing their artwork for an exhibit.

Most recently, local artist Michelle Amicucci has been painting up a storm, and has been coming to us for art supplies as well as framing for over 20 paintings & prints in the last month or so. Michelle's latest adventures have her diving into Pet Portraiture. You can discover the wide variety of artwork Michelle creates on her website at MichelleAmicucci.com. She is also represented by the Front Street Gallery right here in Poulsbo, WA

Michelle is passionate about nature, painting mostly animals and landscapes in watercolor, oil or mixed media. She portrays her subjects in a range from representational to semi-abstract. Her paintings tend to be minimalist – not a lot of background (if any at all). Michelle thinks it's challenging to capture an animal or landscape that is “interesting” and intriguing to a viewer while retaining its individual character – or perhaps, retaining the individual character is what makes it intriguing….

In 1987, after studying at the University of Besançon in Besançon, France, Michelle Amicucci graduated with a degree in French from Carroll College in Helena, Montana. She worked for several years in Washington, D.C. before moving back West where she worked in the natural gas industry for the next 18 years, taking weekend workshops and evening art classes. In 2008 she left her job to spend more time with her mother and pursue art more seriously. Michelle lives locally here in Kitsap County

Janet Cramer Scholarship Fund Off To A Successful Start

The opening reception is now in the past, but there is still time for everyone to help us continue to raise money for NCA Student Scholarships right here in Poulsbo. We still have hundreds of Janet Cramer's original paintings, as well as many posters & prints, so there are artwork choices for all budget levels. The show will continue to hang through November 28th.

We had a fantastic time at the opening reception. With a wide window of time between 3:00 and 8:00 people could stream through, browse through the show, sort through stacks of unframed original watercolors, and talk with family members about the artist. Daughters Nancy Heckler & Karen Brody shared light hearted stories about their mom and how much this would mean to her, and as the night went on, paintings were sold, one by one, making a huge difference for local art students right here in Poulsbo.

Here is another great tree painting, which is framed double sided because it actually has another painting on the back. Come on in to the Poulsbo store to see the other side, as well as all the other great colorful paintings.

Shadow Box Framing, Anything Is Possible!

Here's Derek in our Poulsbo store with a few record album shadowboxes. Not only are these prized possessions shown off proudly, they are also protected from UV light by Tru-Vue Conservation Glass. It is clear Derek had a great time working on these pieces by noticing his display of the devil's horn signs with both hands. Rock on!

Artists' Edge has just released it's fall schedule of art classes and we are now taking registrations. Many of the classes are back by popular demand, and there are also some new classes with new instructors!

Kaye Guerin is a sculptor & painter visiting the area through October. We are very lucky to schedule a 2 day Sculpture workshop with her on Friday & Saturday Sept. 16th & 17th. Here is a photo of one of Kaye's students working on a sculpture. Kaye will also give a short lecture on her sculpture September 10th. Cost to attend is $10 which includes clay and a clay tool. Participants will make something simple from the clay, and if they wish to take the workshop the following week, they can apply the $10 to the tuition as a credit.

Deborah Milton is another new & talented instructor. Deborah will be teaching a 3 week course: Walking the Artists' Edge, Taking Risks with Watercolor which begins October 6th. Also scheduled is her Luminous Mandalas in Colored Pencil day long workshop for Saturday October 15th. Here is a watercolor on Claybord by Deborah, titled "Roots".

Chris Britton offers a great Intro to Cartooning , aka Cartooning 101 on Saturday October 8th from 10am-12pm. In this 2 hour course you'll learn the basic details on how to draw successful cartoons. This class is great for ages 8 through adult.

Back by popular demand, Eileen Sorg will be offering a 2 day Colored Pencil Workshop Saturday & Sunday September 24th & 25th. This will be your only opportunity to take a workshop this fall. Derek Gundy teaches a variety of classes beginning this fall. Drawing Portraits is a 3 week class in which students will work with a model for 3 weeks beginning September 8th, and work toward one or two masterful drawings. We have gotten great results with this class! Intro to Crackle Paste is only $20 and scheduled for Sept. 9th from 1-3pm. If you're wanting to get started in Watercolor Derek's Beginner class is scheduled for Wednesday September 21st. And finally, Derek offers his popular foundation class, Structural Drawing beginning October 12th and running for 5 weeks.

Michele Zarb will be offering an Artist Mentor program beginning this fall. We are still working out the details at this time, and will be posting something shortly.

Matthew Curry Show July & August, Longstreet & Wood on display 2 more weeks...

Here's a reminder that the photo exhibit featuring Harry Longstreet & John Wood will be up for 2 more weeks in our Poulsbo store, until mid July. Make sure you come in and see these wonderful images!

Matthew Curry is our next featured artist and he already has many drawings on display in Poulsbo. Matthew's imaginative work will be on display through August. These wonderful rendered drawings have a little Picasso, a little Dali, and a whole lot of Curry! For those of you who don't know Matthew, he has an electric personality...fully charged and ready to go. I think it is very evident in his drawings as well. Matthew's bio is toward the end of this post.

"History Of Warsaw", photo by Harry Longstreet

While some may move easy into retirement, Harry Longstreet has forged ahead into new territory. After twenty-five years of working in television & film, he has turned his attention to his longtime passion for fine art photography. Since August 2005, his work has been accepted into more than ninety national juried exhibitions and his first one-man-show was held at the Roby–King Gallery in February 2006.

Throughout the ‘80s and into the early ‘90s, Longstreet logged countless hours as a writer/producer/director on network and cable television. Today, it is the storytelling that comes through in his work with great strength. Viewing Longstreet's photographs, one becomes a fly on the wall, watching the story unfold from a distance. A winner of numerous awards for his photographs, Longstreet recently received Color Magazine's Single Image Merit Award (February Issue) for the striking image above: "The History Of Warsaw".

John Wood says, "I take great pleasure in discovering beauty in the "ordinary world," a curtain, an old desk, a piece of abandoned metal, a lampshade. A phrase I read many years ago in an article about a coffee shop in Vienna stays with me: "this little place dignifies the ordinary." These photographs were not taken in a distant, exotic desert or a remote mountain range but close to home. They are views of things we see every day."

Wood's photographs are detailed examinations of objects most people would not notice; a rusting piece of sheet metal, a deteriorating piece of wood, the glow of reflectors off a group of chained up bikes. Wood paints with his camera, capturing the color and structure that reinforce one another. Above is a poetic piece from the show, entitled " Calligraphy"

Matthew X. Curry studied at the Pratt Institute School of Architecture in New York. His architectural training informs all areas of his 20+ year, multi-faceted career including architectural interiors, furniture design, as well as fine art drawings, woodwork and sculpture.

During an invaluable year living in Prague, Matthew focused upon his fine art. He self-published a book of his drawings and co-hosted a USC seminar on International Land Use. Matthew has had the good fortune to practice in diverse arenas including yacht interiors, legal/investment firms, celebrity offices, screening rooms, restaurants and nightclubs. His residential projects have ranged from 150 to 26,000 square feet. Matthew’s work has appeared in several periodicals, galleries on both coasts and on TV/Cable with a feature on HGTV’s “Generation Renovation,” on several HBO programs and in films.

Artist’s Statement

My drawings are meant to evoke a sort of 4th dimension connecting emotive, physical, spiritual and intellectual worlds perhaps yet unknown but perceived through the medium of art and imagination.

The imagery comes from many places all fusing together - like fusion jazz actually! I've always been interested in a kind of malleable time, underlying laws of nature and geometry, entropy (1st law of physics...) and the intensity of how certain things like music feel, and then, how to convey those feelings. It all began on sabbatical in Prague in 1998. Fully intending to develop a line of furniture, I became immersed in a strange and wonderful place with 1000 years of extant history and imagery. In such a heady place, I had the luxury to allow my joy of drawing and all my artistic ideas stew-on paper!

These “unstill life” drawings suggest suspended moments in an illusory and elusive process of change, a passage of physical and metaphysical generation or degeneration.

Did you know we build our own "Ready Made" Frames? When we complete a custom frame job, and there is some moulding left over, we build the largest possible standard size we can. These can be found in both stores as "Pro Frames" The prices are incredibly low, with most ranging from 14.99 -49.99, which often would cost over $100's to build custom. Almost all these include glass and backing, simply select a frame, and we'll cut glass and backing for you right away. Select a ready made mat from our matting station to compliment your artwork or photography.

Art Classes a Big Hit in Poulsbo this Winter

This winter we have had a fantastic response to our art classes & workshops in our Poulsbo store. Ron Stocke was scheduled for a Travel Watercolor Class February 19th which sold out within 4 hours. This was such a great deal too. Our "New Inspiration" Classes are designed to help inspire, giving new direction or a creative boost to artists for a fraction of the cost. You'll see more of these in the future, and they are great events to take advantage of, as they almost always will feature supplies being given to you.

Our next New Inspiration Class will be Crackle Paste Intro with Derek Gundy on Thursday March 17th, 2-4pm. This will feature Golden's Crackle Paste and Ampersand's Claybord Panels. This class is already filling quickly so register today if you are interested. Take an art class on St. Patrick's Day!

Eileen Sorg's Colored Pencil Workshop in late February also is sold out, however if you are interested in taking a class sometime, I would encourage you to give us your email and phone #, just in case there is a cancellation. If Eileen would decide to do another class, this would give us good information to make that decision.

One of the greatest opportunities for learning we have is the Ongoing Oil Painting Classes with Michele Zarb. Michele works with students for 2 hours Tuesday evenings, 6-8pm. This class is mostly individual instruction in a group setting, and great for beginners to well established painters. For $160 a month this one of the best deals going, and it gives you the opportunity to study under the guidance of a professional artist for as long as you want to. Serious students may want to take 2-3 months worth.

Michele also is offering a Gilding Workshop February 12th, and (this is awesome) her popular Mixed Media Workshop March 12th. Working with Powdered Charcoal, Paints, Powdered Metals, Graphite, and anything else imaginable can provide the most incredible results. Gundy's Structural Drawing to begin Jan. 26th

I'll be teaching a new Structural Drawing Session at Artists' Edge in Poulsbo, WA beginning January 26th. The class goes for 5 weeks, meeting from 6-8 every Wednesday evening.

One of the most important skills in becoming a successful artist is drawing. Instructor Derek Gundy teaches this Structural Drawing Class much in the same way he learned from instructors over 20 years ago. Structural Drawing is the process of drawing the "space" that objects occupy, not just the object itself. Allowing the mind to imagine objects as "see-through" and challenging oneself to draw the entire subject brings great breakthroughs to artists wanting to improve their work. Derek will show students how to find new ways of seeing and how to take a different approach to their drawings. This class focuses on strictlyhttp://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gif line drawing, and no erasers are permitted. Students will start out with small objects for drawing, and eventually move to interiors and architectural renderings.

Ron Stocke "Travel Watercolor" Class planned for February 19th

Northwest Watercolorist Ron Stocke will be at Artists' Edge Saturday February 19th for a special demonstration / class using the Aquabee Super Deluxe Sketchbooks (the only sketchbook you'll ever need). Ron will demonstrate his use of colors, travel brushes, and how he captures scenes on location to use for reference later in the studio.

Saturday September 18th is a great day to head to Artists' Edge in Poulsbo. We are located at 18723 Hwy 305. Great deals will be going on all day long, but this not only a great time to get a bargain, its also a great time to meet art instructors and get signed up for classes.

Our open house features a show of 6 new works by Eileen Sorg. Prints will be available unframed and framed. The show is hanging now, come on in and see it anytime. Pictured is "Singing For Your Supper" by Eileen.

At 10:30 Eileen Sorg will give a brief talk about the work she has going on now, showing us some colored pencil work in progress, and talking about techniques that will be covered in her upcoming workshop at Rockwater Art Center. Eileen is also available to sign copies of her book Drawing Made Easy: Colored Pencil, which we will have on hand.

At 11:45 Michele Zarb will talk about her work and her upcoming workshops at Rockwater. Michele is actually teaching 3 this fall. Intro to Oil Painting is a great beginners or intermediate refresher course which runs 5 weeks beginning Oct. 14th. Michele will also have workshops in both Value and Color at Rockwater, both of which would be great taken together.

At 1:00 we welcome watercolorist Ron Stocke, who will give a painting demo between 1:00 and 3:00. Ron taught at Rockwater Art Center last spring and he hopes to teach there again soon.

Artist Derek Gundy will be offering ongoing instruction in acrylic painting at Artists' Edge in Poulsbo, WA. Each Thursday evening, students will meet from 6-8pm to paint, draw, discuss new techniques, and develop a body a work. The Acrylic Classes will be $25 per session, or a month for $90. Students may take just a few, or work under the artist's instruction for months. Classes will begin once registrations are complete. Keep an "OPEN" mind with acrylics, from Golden!

For about a year now, Golden Acrylics have had their new line on the market. It's called OPEN, which refers to an extended drying time. While it has been on our shelves for some time now, many artists are just now beginning to realize the versatility that these paints lend to their creations. I am one of those artists. I paint primarily in watercolors and acrylics. Each medium has a very different feel. Acrylics are known for being a very fast drying medium. They are for the most part, but now Golden Acrylics have given artists the tools of control...control over drying time. I'll be the first to admit, I like paints that dry fast. But there are many times when they dry too quickly and it can be hard to get a nice even belnding of colors, either from dark to light, or from one color gradually into another. OPEN by Golden has changed all that. Where regular acrylics skin over and then dry throughout, OPEN acrylics dry slowly from the inside out. Freaky? Yes? Cool? Yes? You have to give them a try. They are made in 40 of Golden's most popular colors. They can be mixed with any of Golden's regular acrylics, so you can alter the drying times. They also come with many mediums: Open Thinner, Open Medium, Open Gloss Gel, that keep the paint frsh and wet on your palette. Of course you can still just thing with water. Blobs of paint on an uncovered palette have been proven to last for days on their own, and adding the thinner occasionally as they slowly start to firm up can continue to extend their life. Your days of wasted paint are over. When was the last time you started painting, squirted a bunch of Cobalt Blue on the palette, paint for an hour, left it, got distracted, came back the next day to find it dried and wasted? You can't get it back in the tube, can you? Open Acrylics are NOT water soluble oils. They are quite different. They are STILL acrylics, mixable with all other acrylics. Ron Stocke Watercolor Demo a BIG HIT!

This past Saturday Ron Stocke gave us all a wonderful demonstration and lecture about M. Graham Watercolors, Painting Landscapes, Mixing Greens, with lots of great tips and tricks for everyone. This marks the first demo using our newly installed demo mirror hung from the ceiling of our Poulsbo store. This enables everyone to see what is being painted, and we look forward to having many more artists and instructors use it in the near future. We thank Ron for coming and sharing his knowledge and talent with us. Hopefully he'll be back soon!

Another 2 day colored pencil workshop has been added for Eileen Sorg at Artists' Edge in Poulsbo, Washington. The workshop will be held Friday July 31st and Saturday August 1st in our Poulsbo classroom. Students can expect an intense 2 days, meeting 9:30-4:30 each day. Eileen focuses on the drawing, inking, and watercolor on the first day, and colored pencil on the second day. 5 places are already taken in this workshop which will accomodate a maximum of 8. What are artist trading cards?
Artist trading cards (ATCs) are miniature pieces of art that are traded around the world. Artists create, trade and collect art at organized “swap” events, either in person or online. The only official rule for ATCs is the size: 2.5" x 3.5".

How did the movement start?
In 1997, M. Vanci Stirnemann, a Swiss artist, created 1200 cards by hand as part of an exhibit. On the last day, he invited others to create their own cards and trade with him during the closing reception. The movement took off, and today, there are ATC swaps in almost every major city around the world. There are also many online swaps.

How do I create ATCs?
Most swaps are open to any media, materials or techniques as long as the card fits into a standard trading card sleeve. ATCs are traded, not sold. However, there are some artists who choose to sell cards. Cards that are sold are called Art Card Editions and Originals (ACEO).

How do I trade cards?
You can locate an in-person swap in your area, find an online swap, or organize your own swap. There are a number of Web sites that others have created to help artists get started. They can be found by doing online searches using key words such as “artist trading cards.”

Selling Crackle to Artists...

The latest and greatest product we've had at both Artists' Edge stores is the Golden Crackle Paste. Available in 8 and 16 oz jars, and higher volumes by special order, this is an unpredictable but incredibly fascinating ground for all kinds of mediums. To be very clear...this is NOT a crackle finish. This is to be used as a white ground. I find the best method is to apply the ground with a thickness of at least 1/16" and maybe even better at 1/8". The deeper the ground goes on, the more distinct cracks you will get. Be sure to use crackle paste ONLY on hard surfaces such as masonite, or cradled art boards such as those made by Ampersand. Crackle Paste can be very fragile and flake off of flexible surfaces such as stretched canvas. Crackle Paste works well on Claybord, Gesso Board, Cradle Art Boards, etc...products available through our stores. Crackle Paste is best applied with a palette knife or similar tool. Then leave overnight for drying. Qualities of cracks depend on the environment, weather, the surface, and how it has been applied. You'll never get the same result twice. Once the Crackle Paste is dry, you can paint on top of it. I use Golden Acrylic Paints, and often I will paint heavily over the entore surface, and then rub paint off the main surface with a wet paper towel or sponge. The darkest paint is left in the cracks, and you can get some amazing effects this way. Above is a chess themed painting I recently completed with Golden Acrylics and Crackle Paste: "Into the Knight"
